Industrial EPC engineering: what to define before procurement

Understand engineering, procurement and construction integration and organise interfaces, deliverables and acceptance.

What does EPC mean?

EPC stands for Engineering, Procurement and Construction. Coordinating these activities connects design, equipment supply, installation and start-up.

The model name alone does not define the scope. A proposal should identify supply boundaries, exclusions, client responsibilities and acceptance criteria.

Compare integration responsibilities

When disciplines are contracted separately, the client or its project manager coordinates supplier interfaces. An integrated scope concentrates part of this coordination with the contractor.

Consider design maturity, the available management team, existing-plant interfaces and potential changes. Comparing discipline prices alone can leave integration tasks without an owner.

Prepare the procurement basis

Collect process requirements, site information, utilities, access restrictions and the operating window. Define design approval, procurement, assembly and commissioning milestones.

List drawings, equipment documentation, inspection and test records, final documentation and training. Agree how interfaces with existing structures and systems will be checked.

Assess relevant experience

Ask what the supplier actually delivered, for whom and in what operating context. Distinguish a whole-plant reference from work on one area or discipline.
